Wine Mixed with Water
An interesting delicacy found in southern Europe is eating horse. The meal is found in small eateries around town and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to try it. I was sure that it wouldn’t taste weird, but I was still apprehensive. When we arrived in a small ski town on the way home from Delphi, we made our way to a taverna Dr. Finitsis likes. The view was amazing. I could see all the rooftops of the village and the rolling hills in the background. On the menu was horse with lemon sauce. Professor said this cafe would make it very well. The lemon sauce would be the consistency of gravy with a hint of lemon. I decided to try it! I am definitely not an adventurous eater, but “when in Greece!” When it arrived on my place mat, it looked like any other white meat and I tasted the sauce. The sauce was really good right off the bat and I was really excited to try the meat. I cut into it any everyone watched as I took my first bite. It was actually really good and didn’t taste any different that chicken or pork. It was a little bit gamey but I enjoyed it. I’m proud I was open to trying new foods in a new culture!
"If it is well told and to the point, that is what I myself desired; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that was the best I could do. For just as it is harmful to drink wine alone, or, again, to drink water alone, while wine mixed with water is sweet and delicious and enhances one's enjoyment, so also the style of the story delights the ears of those who read the work. And here will be the end." 2 Maccabees 15: 38-39.
