Wine Mixed With Water: A story about my worst fear

Our exciting Athens adventure of the day was a trip to the Archeological Museum. Just like I've talked about with all of the other incredible museums we've visited here, there was so much well-preserved history! My favorite part of the museum was all of the old jewelry (so many rings!), but the most interesting part of the museum had nothing to do with the exhibits...

After the hour walk to get to the museum, plus the time we spent lookng at everything, I really really had to use the bathroom. So I asked Professor Finitsis where it was, and he gave me some somewhat confusing directions, but I was pretty sure I knew where I was going. I grabbed Kirsten to go with me (because of course girls can't go to the bathroom alone) and headed toward the elevator to get downstairs where the bathroom was. I remembered seeing this elevator before, so I had no problem finding it. When we approached the elevator, it was open and dark inside. For someone who isn't the biggest fan of elevators, this freaked me out a little. But Kirsten pushed some button and a light came on, so I relaxed a little. Once we got inside the elevator, we pushed the button for the basement floor, but nothing happened. We pushed it again and again but still nothing. Just to see if the elevator actually worked, we pushed the button for the second floor, and up we went. So we walked back down to the first floor, where we ran into two ladies who worked at the muesum. They must have been watching and/or listening to us the entire time, because they asked if we were looking for the bathroom. We said yes, and they gave us some more confusing directions, made more confusing by the language barrier. Finally we found another elevator, this one even scarier looking than the first. Not only was it dark, it was cold. I was tempted to just give up on the bathroom search, but my tiny bladder and the long walk home that loomed ahead convinced me to suck it up and go in the creepy elevevator. We walked in, and searched in the dark for the button that would take us downstairs. We finally found it and pushed it, and the elevator slowwwwwly made its way down. But when we reached the floor, the doors wouldn't open! Which is one of my biggest fears: getting trapped in an elevator. I had no idea what to do, so a moment of panic occurred. When that moment passed, I put on my big girl thinking cap. We just started hitting all of the buttons, hpoing that one of them would make the door open. Since it was dark we had no idea what we were hitting, so for all we know we could have set off fire alarms in the building or something. But after what seemed like hours, but was probably only two or three minutes, the doors finally opened. I have no idea if it was our button pushing, or if the elevator just decided to stop hating us, but I don't care. We made it out alive, and that's all that matters. Of course, once we got out of the elevator, it couldn't be easy. We had to stop and ask four people how to get to the bathroom. And when we finally found it, we realized that there was a staircase leading down to it. A staircase that we had been standing about 20 feet from when we first started on our adventure to find the bathroom. Grrrrrrr. If we had just taken the stairs, we would have saved ourselves a lot of time, and wouldn't have got stuck in the elevator!! But hey, where's the fun in that?
