“One man’s trash is another person’s treasure.”

Yesterday I took another trip to the flea market. There are so many knick knacks to look at that it requires more than one day of shopping. The alley is full of colored beads and necklaces, shot glasses that have Greece’s flag printed on them and shirts that read “I love Greece.” Down the street, further into the urban part of Athens there are even more venders selling a wide assortment of items. The sellers don’t stick with a theme in their venue and sometimes it seems as if they are trying to pon off their families used goods. It is full of excitement as people are looking through books and used clothing and shoes. I walked through looking at the array of bits and pieces. Next thing I know, I am digging through a pile of posters. There are pictures of Hilary Duff and Brittany Spears in picture frames. Greeks must think that is what the American woman looks like. An older man stands behind a table full of small unknown bottles. He points at the ground and I see a Euro lying on the cobble stone. The man doesn’t know much English but gestures for me to pick it up. I bend over to find out that it is stuck. When I look at the man, he laughs and smiles as he says “good superglue!” After digging through piles of every other thing, I come across a pocket watch that looked a little warn. I opened it up to find that it was made by Queen Elizabeth in 1940. It was lined with gold and had a nice lavender color on the inside. I asked the man sitting there how much it was and he told me it was six Euros. I wasn’t sure if this was a steal or a rip off, but after pondering over the inexpensive buy, I purchased this pocket watch. Later in the day, when I was back in the apartment, I did some leisurely research to find out that Queen Elizabeth only made 10 of these pocket watches and they are a luxurious and rare item. I hold this expensive watch and realize that I am one of the lucky ten to be in possession of this rare jewel.

"If it is well told and to the point, that is what I myself desired; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that was the best I could do. For just as it is harmful to drink wine alone, or, again, to drink water alone, while wine mixed with water is sweet and delicious and enhances one's enjoyment, so also the style of the story delights the ears of those who read the work. And here will be the end." 2 Maccabees 15: 38-39.
