We landed in Rhodes today. We were greeted with warm, tropical rain and I was okay with this. (The weather report for the rest of the week is slightly more optimistic). This island seems promising, even if it's empty. We're staying in one of the only two hotels open during the off season. On the way to said hotel our fearless leader said "Look to the right. That is Turkey!" Man, we
are close to Turkey! I'm still in Greece but I feel like I'm seeing the opposite side of the coin. What's fascinating about Rhodes is how many different cultures obviously influenced it over the years. If you didn't know any better, you might not think it's part of Greece. Considering the proximity, you'd think it was part of Turkey! To add to the weirdness, we definitely ran into a couple who owned a restaurant and spoke nothing but Italian.
I'm excited to experience the "mixed salad" that is Rhodes (as our professor so eloquently put it). And it all started with a glance at Turkey, across the water and through the fog.
