Choose Wisdom... Choose to Live!

So far in class, we've talked about different kinds of wisdom: experiential and mantic. Today, we discussed a different kind of wisdom found in the Wisdom of Solomon. This kind of wisdom is more of a cosmic energy that reaches all ends of the universe, one that you have to CHOOSE to recieve and embrace. Those who choose this wisdom will gain eternal life. Going off of that, I'd like to talk about that idea: choice. And how the choices we make in our lives affect not only us but those around us.

There are certain circumstances we are all born with, like it or not. The family you have, socio-economic status, where you live, genentics. And for the most part, there's nothing you can really do to change that. Some people are just born "luckier" than others. But it's what you do with the hand you're dealt that really matters. How you CHOOSE to react to the situation is what really counts and shows your character. I can't tell you how many times in my life I've said "not fair!" about a situation. And ususally, I'm right. The situation isn't fair. But me saying "not fair" isn't going to change anything. As I blog about often, some of my favorite moments on this trip have been the quiet time I get to just sit and think while staring at a beautiful view. From now on, I'm going to choose to be more positive about crappy situations.

I have to say I am proud of pretty much all of the (big) choices I have made on this trip. I don't want to go home with any regrets, thinking I missed out on something that I may never get the chance to do again. I came here determined to not miss out on anything, and so far I think I've lived up to this. I've tried a lot of new food, and have been pleasantly surprised by how much I like it. I haven't missed a single class excursion, even when I'm so tired I feel like I'm going to collapse. I swam in the Aegean, even though it was cold and windy and I was scared of getting attacked by a fish. I know I would regret it if I had chosen not to do any of the things I have done on this trip!

What I'm trying to say is that YOU get to choose how you live your life. You can choose to just be, exist by breathing and going through the motions. Or you can choose to LIVE. Right now all I can think of is Miss Frizzle's line from the Magic School Bus: "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!" If you choose to never take a chance, you may never get hurt. But you will also probably never get anything really awesome either. By taking chances you take a risk, but also have the option of getting a really high reward... Choose to live a life of no regrets.
