Walking among the gods

Today we took a day trip to Delphi where we visited the monastery Osios Loukas and the sanctuary of Athena, along with many other things. The name Delphi comes from the word dolphin, which is the form Apollo is said to have taken while making his journey to the city of Delphi.

The architecture at the monastery was incredible. So many amazing stones, bricks and art as well as breathtaking views. It was interesting to discover that making honey is a big part of life within this monastery.

We were able to see the omphalos stone as well, which is said to be the center of the earth. The story goes that Zeus sent out two eagles from opposite ends of the earth and that the place where the stone resides is where they finally came together.

Finally, we walked down to see the sanctuary of Athena who is said to be the goddess of wisdom. There didn’t seem to be much left of her sanctuary, but it was still just as incredible none the less, surrounded by gorgeous rocks and olive trees.

After walking through all these historical places, and learning about the gods that were believed to reside in Delphi I guess you could say that today I walked among the gods.
