Yesterday's blog post was a poem inspired by a bronze statue of Poseidon that I saw in the National Archaeology museum. So while I did see the statue it, unfortunately, did not speak to me. At least, not in the literal sense. Metaphorically, I suppose you could say it spoke to me.
Anyways.
Today, to complete my Poseidon experience, we went to the Temple of Poseidon. At first it didn't look like many were very interested in the trip and I wasn't sure what was going to happen. But we ended up going in the end and I just hope that people don't regret today. Even if they didn't pay to get a closer look I hope they were as moved as I was by the giant ruins; it was more complete than any other Temple we've seen so far and I couldn't help but be impressed. I, personally, will never get tired of ancient ruins.
We were blessed with a beautiful day as well, as you can probably tell! This was the trip I suggested we go on, way back in the beginning of the fall semester. It made me so happy to see what I had researched. The water around us was blue and, with the sun on my back, it wasn't too cold. Even now, looking at the picture (above), I can't stop smiling. The gods, the experience, Greece, all of it feels more real to me at these temples. I found myself, almost jokingly, thanking Poseidon for a calm sea today.
After we had seen everything we could see we said goodbye to the temple and headed out to a beach (most of us were determined to get in the water today) and a cafe (others just wanted a warm beverage. I was one of those people). Overall, the day was so relaxing. It was the best free day anyone could ask for. We were never rushing anywhere. We relaxed at the temple, we relaxed on the beach, and we drank out coffee leisurely. The bus ride was no big deal (just a little behind schedule) and we all got home safe.
Much love from Athens,
