The Good Life

The last couple days in Rhodes have been amazing. So instead of focusing solely on one story, I'm going to tell a bunch of small anecdotes.

SYMI
Yesterday we woke up bright and early to catch the 8:30 am ferry to the island of Symi, which is right off the coast of Rhodes. The water was a little choppy so the Catamaran ride was quite jumpy. When we arrived the sun came out but the wind didn't die down, but that wouldn't affect our spirits. We started to explore the town and find a nice little cafe to sit and have coffee. I was so happy to find a cafe that served
a latte! Although lattes here don't come with flavors, so I always add a packet of sugar. The sugar here was so cute that I had to take a picture of it. After we all finished sipping our coffees we were off to find a beach for swimming. We asked some of the locals where we should go and they all pointed left, so we headed to the left. The island was so small that there was either right or left and we couldn't get lost if we tried.

SWIMMING
When we found the beach, it wasn't fancy or anything but we just made camp anyways and found a good spot to wade in. The best spot we could find was next to a rock wall and a prime space for wind, but Zach, Alex, Khadijah, and I didn't mind. We ran in and the water wasn't even that cold. My lower body was a lot warmer than my upper body that was being murdered by the 30mph wind gusts. It was my first chance to swim in the Mediterranean though and it was awesome! Now, getting out of the water, different story. The wind was so cold that I couldn't even move. I ran up this little hill to try and hide being a wall to avoid the wind but the wall was covered in prickly plants so I didn't know what to do. I was so cold though that I was just stuck on the hill. Zach gave me the only towel we had and it was so windy that I didn't even have to hold it, I just had to stand facing the wind and it stayed around me.

SYMI SHRIMP
For lunch Khadijah, Camille and I went to Pantelis, a little seafood restaurant. We all ordered shrimp, I got the famous symi shrimp, Camille got garlic prawns, and Khadijah got pesto prawns. The owner was actually having his last day before closing for winter so he was in a great mood. He brought us appetizers and desserts on the house. So overall it was obviously a great meal. He was really sweet and sat down to talk to us. He told us about his travel plans to Rhodes, then Turkey, then Istanbul, and back to Greece that he does every year. The food and atmosphere were great!
VIEW FROM THE TOP
After lunch a group of us decided to walk up the winding stairs as far as we could to get an amazing view of the harbor. We weave around all the houses and trees until we found the very top of the hill. The view was so beautiful. We could see the entire town, Turkey, and whatever other countries and island these are.
OLYMPIC GAMES AND A TALENT SHOW Today we walked up to the Acropolis of Rhodes after class. When we arrived we saw a giant stadium and a theatre and Dr. Finitsis informed us that we were required to either perform in the olympic games or the talent show. Of course, I was the first to raise my hand for the games. Basically all we had to do was run down to the end of the stadium and back. At first I wasn't feeling competitive about this task at all, until the nice security guard made 3 laurel leaf crowns for the top 3 winners. Now this was a race to the death. We started off and I sprinted after Zach and Richard, when we reached the end we had to high five Dr. Finitsis and head back. I was surprised I was still sprinting by the end and I passed Richard. So he started cheering for me to beat Zach and I tried really hard but Zach took first place, I took second, and Richard took third. Afterwards Finitsis organized an award ceremony. After we caught our breath, the girls started preparing for there talent show. The group sang "I'm Yours" accapella, without practice and it was amazing! Then Dr. Finitsis taught us the Zorba dance and we danced to a song playing on his Iphone. It was great and I'm so glad no one broke an ankle on the cobblestone.

P.S. I miss you momma!
