The Edge of Glory

Today was demonstration day in Athens, the start of a 48 hour strike in the infamous Syntagma Square. So a large part of our group decided to go see the Temple of Poseidon in the town of Sounion by the coast and spend time on the beaches.

We got to Sounion around 12:30 in the afternoon. The setting was gorgeous, it was on top of a huge cliff overlooking the coast for miles and the sea and quite a few small towns that looked like your typical postcard Greek cities. The walk up wasn't bad at all, and a group of us went and took pictures up there and just looked at the scenery. After a while, some people left to go to a different city to spend time on the beaches, but a group of us stayed to see the sunset.

After just sitting and relaxing all day, the wait was worth it. The colors were phenominal; looking in one direction you saw reds, oranges, pinks, and other warmer colors, and the other direction had blues, purples, darker colors. We were all alone up there besides one couple, and all of us were just standing there mesmerized with the beauty of everything. It was truly an incredible experience.

When I first got the email from the US Embassy saying there was going to be a demonstration today, I was thinking how inconvenient it was because today was the free day of the trip. Instead, it turned out to be one of my favorite days so far, and will be one that I remember for a very long time.
