When hearing the blog topic, it made sense to go with the whole cemetery theme. We were talking about the community at Qumran today, and they had a really strong belief in the duality of light and darkness, and were always striving to be in the light. Which has strong ties to the afterlife. Which has strong ties to the cemetery.
But now, after just getting back from a fairly epic European football game, that's all I can think about. The only connection I can make with children of light and the game is that when the home team scored the only goal of the game 2 minutes before the end, the fans lit flares on fire in the stands and shot off fireworks. It was so much fun, and I'm sure highly illegal, but hey, it was a fairly intense moment. So, I guess that's some sort of light...
And I guess you can make the super corny connection that our group has "children of light," those who are striving after something bigger than themselves. When we went to the game, we all got really into it and bought gear for the home team and all got really into the game. There was a group of men standing and singing the entire time, and by the end we could at least mumble along and sing the "ole" parts. When the team scored, we were jumping up and down, Andrew was hugging everyone and screaming, we were all laughing and taking pictures of the people who were pretty much ready to charge the field. We all got really into the culture of the Greeks at their soccer game, so in that way we're connecting to something bigger than ourselves, just like the people in the Qumran community.
These are all fairly out there connections which literally make no sense with the blog topic. All in all, I just want to say how amazing today was and how I wish we had more opportunities to go to soccer games. We had a great time, and I'm so happy that our group has connected so well over the past week.
