Body and Soul.

Today in class we talked about how the author of 4 Maccabees believes that reason can be used to control emotion and the different categories that emotions can be put into: pleasure and pain. Both body and soul can experience pleasure and pain. The Greeks believed that there exists a third element in the equation the mind from which comes reason that can control the emotion felt by the other two. This idea of the mind, body, and soul is what I grew up believing was the way a human person functioned not the idea put forth by the author of 4 Maccabees.

The mind is the only place that reason is located and reason is the pursuit of wisdom. Wisdom is what connects you to God and as I mentioned in my pervious blog post you can fall in love with wisdom. So now I know that the pursuit of wisdom is reason. If I were to want to court wisdom and fall in love with her, I would have to have reason. Therefore with reason I can date wisdom and get to know wisdom. If my reason is good enough I can bring wisdom home to meet my parents and then meet wisdom’s parent aka God. And if he then approves of me and we get to know each other I can ask God if I can marry wisdom. He will then walk wisdom down the aisle and give wisdom away at our wedding. Wisdom and I will then live happily ever after in a reason based relationship. Wisdom and I will stroll through the rain and talk about reason and how we both love it.
