We stopped yesterday lunch in the city of Sparta and, of course, it was totally different than the barbarianism portrayed in the mass media. I'm not much of a movie buff but I do know the general details of 300 and how they're probably as accurate as saying Sparta was founded by a bowl of pudding. Nonetheless, ancient Spartans are known for their physical prowess and violence. I've gleaned that much from my studies.
I liked it. It was quiet. No horns. No screams. No one seemed to hurry. The atmosphere was clean. The oppressiveness of cramped buildings and decaying plaster was gone. I felt no malice or ill-will. Sparta was serene and enjoyable. Their history may be steeped in blood, by the current state of the town is nothing short of calming.
I'd love to go back. I would happily make that destination my main focus the next time I come to Greece. Sparta is my sort of place.
