Athens welcome us sleep deprived students with welcome arms and a little rain but that wasn't going to slow us down. The ten hour flight was just that, ten hours of sitting, so amsterdam was a treat. The architecture of the airport put SeaTac to shame.
After the great but brief time in Holland was over we hopped on a plane for another 3 hour flight, which felt like nothing after the first. When we arrived in Athens we all nervously paced by the conveyor belt waiting for our luggage to appear and no one left upset, then we were rushed onto a bus. The bus ride to our apartments was pretty quiet, both from exhaustion and everyone staring at the city ahead. Dr. Finitsis immediately whisked us away to our apartments where we could unpack and get used to the place. Then we were off to the supermarket to fill our fridge. We bought some Greek strawberry yogurt (which is amazing), Orange juice, and bread, among other things. Our first meal in Greece was slovaki and it was only 2 euros and really delicious! Then when we almost thought we got out of the death march, we began the death march. We walked from our apartments, around the acropolis, and back which I estimated to be about 6 miles. It was freezing and my brain was running on empty, but it was beautiful! When we got back to our apartments I turned the heat up to 26 celcius (which Im still not sure how hot that is) and fell asleep in less than a minute. This morning we met up around 10:30 and headed off to the flea market.
It was very busy but all the shops were so cool. I found it interesting that instead of one big store with everything, there is just many small shops selling one thing (like backgammon boards). After that we found a cute little cafe that had english translated on their menus, since it was our first ordering experience. Luckily, the waitress spoke pretty good english. She was very sweet and taught us how to order coffee, which is very important to me! Today was so great and really helped figure out the lay of the land. I can't wait to explore more of this beautiful city!
