I thought that this was a significant quote because it shows the power that one person can have on people. Much like Judith any individual can impact a group of people , or individual people for that matter. While in Greece I feel like Judith. This is because my actions and my words represent not only myself, but America, Washington, and Pacific Lutheran University. It is because of all these layers that I represent that it is especially important that I am portraying these layers in a positive light.
From my time in Greece so far I have learned that the way people behave in different cultures can vary greatly. For example, in Greece if two people are talking to each other in elevated voices it does not mean that they are fighting, this is just how they express themselves. Whereas in America if two people are talking to each other in elevated voices it usually means that there is an argument going on.
These variances in culture combined with the knowledge that one person can have such an impact put into perspective how I should not only try to represent myself, but also that I need to consider this when learning and observing the people in Greece.
One way that I have found to try and learn about the Greek culture is to communicate in as much Greek as possible, not only do they appreciate our attempt, but it also makes them more open to talking, even if it is in English.
Being a tourist is a heavy wait to carry, because lets face it, no one wants to come off as the obnoxious tourists. We are hear to learn and share, and hopefully like Judith I can impact them as they impact me.
