My Inner Greek
I was not born in Greece, I have not lived in Greecenor have I ever even visited Greece until this month. However, I feel like there is a part of my heart that is Greek. I don’t know yet if I will be able to take it back home with me. I might just need to come back one day to retrieve it.
Today, the 17th of January, demonstrations were scheduled to take place. Many public forms of transportation were shut down, but we managed to make our way to the beach. After a safe bus ride, we made it right by the Temple of Poseidon and cliffs that overlooked the best view of Athens. The class had packed a sack lunch and we found a level spot hanging over the water an
d sat in peace eating our bakery sandwiches. There was a moment were everyone settled down, and the crumbling paper of the sandwich quieted as we sat in silence listening to the wind on the water. Greece’s water is just as it is seen on postcards and posters. There are some spots where the coral reef reveals itself and the water looks blue-green. After our adventurous and peaceful beach day, we sat in a cafĂ© looking over our seashells and rocks. As the time approached, we gathered our belongings (along with some covered sand clothing) and waited at the bus stop. The sun was setting as we approached outside. The colorful beauty of Athens is a pallet I have never before exper
ienced. The sun sets and the sea sighs in and out in Tacoma, but it does not seem to produce the same sort of happy glow that Greece does. The shades of vibrant colors are a recollection that will be ingrained in my memory forever. As we stand at the bus stop, watching the sun go down, I huddle with my roommates to keep warm. We have bonded so quickly in the past week and a half. This friendship we have created will endure long past Greece. This country continues to sweep me off of my feet and surprise me daily.
