Losing My Head...Literally

Our Group Plus the Talented Team of Hair Magicians
Today the group had the option to either go to the beach or go to the salon and get our hair done. I definitely chose the spa day with the girls (we will go to the beach again).

This was the first time I have spent a significant amount of time in a smaller group of people-6 of us instead of 10-14-and I learned so much more about these girls. We started off by taking the Metro with the Professor a couple stations outside of the city and then hopped a bus to the salon. The stylist and shop owner were very nice and put up with our American-touristy attitudes (we took pictures of literally every moment!-317 total). I was really excited to get something crazy done...when in Greece, right? I decided red would be a good color and we came up with a cool placement technique for the chunks-so they will be conservative enough for school and work but with just enough rebellion to appease my adventurous side.

There were only 3 employees-the shop owner who did all the coloring, an assistant to hold the foils and wash the hair, and the stylist who did the blow drying and fun quirky hairstyles. It was incredible watching them work together, as each of the 6 of us was tossed from one hair magician to the next never missing a beat. It was controlled chaos, if that is possible. Imagine this as a song, a sort of urban street music: Hair is flying all over the place-swish, swish, swish; girls are giggling: he he ha he he ha; the employees and the professor were cracking jokes: [insert Greek words] ha ha ha; and the sound of a shutter camera: click, click-click, click.

While we were not in a chair we were gathered around Greek gossip magazines and looking at the photos of Greek celebrities and personalities. Sometimes we made up stories to go with their photos, since obviously we don't understand the Greek captions and articles.

6 Charlie's Angels-See how we do!
The entire afternoon at the salon was a flurry of girls running around taking pictures of every cut of hair, every brush of color, every burst of hairspray just to make sure we would have enough to work with for our blogs tonight. At one point, the Professor had us pose as Charlie's Angels with our new "hair makeovers" he called them. We were making jokes with the stylists and learning new Greek phrases. All in all, it was chaotic, but with a rhythm that kept us all relaxed. Plus, having such a small group really made a difference in the depth of our conversations. There really is nothing like a day at the salon to bring the girls closer together.

Before!

The stylist braided a wreath into my hair.
Very cool-because my name means wreath of flowers.

Khadijah and I were really excited about the new do's.
So, yes, I did lose my head today, but it was in a fun, light-hearted way. It was a great way to learn more about the other girls on this trip and experiment with hair. Oh, PS Finitsis got his hair done with us as well. I think he had more fun watching us interact with the stylists.

Done!
