I've always heard that Athens was a beautiful city that was not only rich in culture and intelligence. On my very first day that I stepped foot, I noticed that everything in this wonderful city is lined or even completely made out of Marble. Being a Geoscience nerdaholic, one of my main interests were what types of geologic material could be found around the city. Nothing was more plentiful than Marble. Back in the United States, Marble is usually used for countertops or tile flooring, and for other decorative accents around the house. Here, streets are made entirely out of marble. Large buildings are covered in marble panels cemented on top of cinderblock, the main material buildings here are made of instead of drywall back home. Entire statues are made out of marble as well as the plazas and squares that they are erected in. Well decorated fountains are made of marble as well. About all of the beautiful temples that we passed were covered with Marble. I found this plethora of Marble around Athens to be one of the most beautiful features of this amazing city.
Marble ruins, of course
Marble staircases and side panels on houses

Marble streets, sidewalks, and even fences!
Stay classy Athens and thank for stopping by,
Khadijah
