Experimental Wisdom

Marble is very slippery when wet (or dry)

Today while walking back to my apartment it began to rain a little, no big deal since it pretty much rains everyday in Seattle. But something was different this time: a majority of the walkways and stairs in Athens are made of marble. So as I was walking to unlock my apartment building door that little bit of rain had already piled up on the marble stairs outside the apartment. After I realized this, I had already begun to slip but luckily didn’t completely fall flat on my face. However, the inside stairs up to my room were completely dry so I didn’t think I had much to worry about.

Wrong.

While walking up them I slid a little as well, but thankfully once again I didn’t fall to the ground.

Later in the day we experienced “Athens by Night” and got to see an amazing view of the entire city of Athens. However we too got there by taking many flights of stairs and sidewalks made of marble. At this point it had been sprinkling for most of the day, so they were extremely slippery. While walking back down I slide multiple times, but thanks to the railing I was able to catch myself.

What’s the moral of the story? Be careful when walking on marble stairways, or just be careful when walking next to me so that if I do eventually fall, you won’t go down with me :)
