Today while in class we looked at a text titled “The Wisdom of Solomon.” This text was written during the in between time period between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. This text helped shape some of the major Christian theology we practice today.
The text got me thinking about the value of wisdom and its importance.
So why choose wisdom? Here are a few reasons that I came up with…
1) Knowledge is power
Throughout the course of history, many empires were able to emerge victorious against opposing armies of much larger size due to more intelligent strategies or advanced weaponry.
Empires that emphasized the importance of education and knowledge were far more sustainable, outlasting others, and consequently had lasting impacts that helped make us who we are today. Knowledge is power, and world history proves that.
2) Education is one thing that someone can never take away from you
Because wisdom tangible, yet not physically tangible, it can never be taken away from someone. Although you may forget things you learn, the wisdom that you withhold will always stay with you. No matter what befalls you in this life, you will never be stripped of the wisdom you hold. Therefore, wisdom has nothing to do with money, race, creed, or sexual orientation, wisdom can be gained by anyone who seeks it. This brings me to my next point…
3) You can never stop accumulating wisdom because it never ends.
If you seek wisdom, you’ll find it, you just need to pursue it, because it is willingly shared everywhere. There is an infinite amount of wisdom to gain and it doesn’t come from any particular source. It can come from a university, a family member, or even a homeless person on the side of the road. There are literally sources ALL around us that are just waiting to pass their wisdom on. Wisdom is infinite, and it is meant to be shared.
4) Wisdom is the most valuable thing you can pass on
I will be a happy man if at the end of my life, my children, and my children’s children, become much wiser men and women than I. I would much rather give them wisdom, than any amount of wealth. Why? Because although wisdom has no monetary value, it is the most valuable thing we can gain for our race’s sustainability. Universities are so expensive today because we have tried to put a price on education. Tuition rates are blatant illustrations of the value wisdom holds. By choosing wisdom you spur the next generation on to further exceed the wisdom you have already gained. Imagine if our ancient ancestors never passed on the wisdom of the wheel, or how to build fire. Without the passing on of wisdom, there is no advancement of the human race. If we truly want the best for our children, we must fight the urge to be lazy and live in ignorance, and pursue wisdom. Wisdom has no expiration, there is an unlimited supply, sources are everywhere, and it will advance the quality of life for the generation after you. Therefore wisdom is the most valuable thing we can pass on to the next generation.
Therefore I urge you, nay, plead you, to choose wisdom. Mankind will be forever grateful.
