Bad Romance

Every relationshiop has its ups and downs, and a bad relationship is always one that comes with an expiration date. There are stages that every romance goes through and the first stage is always the chase.

THE CHASE
The chase is when you first meet someone and you know that you want to get to know them better. They are interesting and not like anyone you have ever met before. You are instantly intrigued. You start to think about them at random times and you just dont know why. This is how i felt when i chose to apply to this trip. I met with Dr. Finitsis and his description of Greece intrigued me. It sounded like an area I would love to explore and get to know like the back of my hand. I was set in my goals and I knew I had to get into the program. Every chase ends when one person asks the other on a date. I sent in my application in February and nervously awaited a reply from Megan Grover. When i finally read the words, "You've been accepted!" I couldn't wait for the second stage, our first date.

THE FIRST DATE
The first date was scheduled for January 7th around 3pm. I spent the whole day packing and getting dolled up in my favorite leggings and comfy sweatshirt. As we boarded the plane, my stomach filled with butterflies and I knew that this was the beginning of a J-term fling, but that didn't stop me. The beginning of the date was like any other, a little awkward. I sat in the front of the plane, by myself, so there wasn't much conversation. After landing the date really began. THe city was beautiful and I couldn't wait to get to know it. I immediately fell in love with the dim atmosphere and the butling nightlife. Everything good happens after 2am here! The restaurants all have authentic, fresh food that no one could hate. Every which way you look there is something jaw dropping in your line of sight. My first impression of Greece was it's beauty. Basically, love at first sight. Although I was a little confused about the hand held showers and noisy streets, I learned to love them. Opposites attract, right? After a marvelous first date always comes the honeymoon stage.

THE HONEYMOON STAGE
I got to know the streets of Greece unexpectedly well in such a short period of time. I knew what I liked and disliked about it. Obviously the likes far outweighted the dislikes. The new things I learn about it still give me butterflies. The rich past and dramatic but interesting present keeps me intrigued and interested in its unique personality. Sometimes we fight, like when the barking dogs keep me up or when the weather calls for an umbrella, but that's okay. I still go to bed excited to see it again in the morning. But we all know that with every fling, comes and expiration date.

EXPIRATION DAY
The dreaded day, February 1st, no one is looking forward to that day. The day has been on everysheet and itinerary we've seen but it just hasn't seemed real. It's just hitting me right now that we are going to have to say our goodbyes in 5 short days. We could try to make it work but long distance relationships just never work out. There will be tears and sad goodbyes but the end is inevitable. Who knows, if its meant to be in the future it will work out in the end. For now it is best that Athens and I break up. The worst romances are the ones with an expiration date, so you have to make the best out of the time you have.
