Throughout the weeks that I have been in Greece so far I feel
as though everyday I become a little more Greek (or at least I just hope…).
When the encounters with Greek first began, I was nervous about speaking Greek
to them without being judged. But after the first day, I just went for it and
every opportunity that I had to speak Greek; I did my best to do that!
The only issue with speaking only a little bit of Greek is
that when I begin a conversation in Greek, they always seem to answer me with
fast paced (incomprehensible to me) Greek. I soon realized that they were only
talking to me in Greek not the other group members that I am with. During the
first couple of days I was told that I looked Greek, and from then on I seem to
hear it everyday. Even the other day when I was at the super market surrounded
by all Americans the storeowners proceeded to say “You, you are Greek!” and
“Your parents must be Greek!”
Not only do I have the curly mane, brown eyes and olive skin
tone that are considered Greek but I also wear very European clothes (all
black, grays and white). The only
question that still roams my mind after all of the comments I have gotten is:
MOM DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL ME?!
Truly, I wish I was Greek and that I was able to immediately
realize what everyone is trying to say to me. But I guess the adventure
consists of learning a new phrase everyday and enjoying the confusing yet
amazing experience as “a Greek”.'

S’agapo,
Alex
